I trained in Aikido before at another dojo and attained rank do I have to start from the beginning?
No. We never strip anyone of their rank. Every new member that is ranked in Aikido will go through an evaluation period (usually 90 days) in which you will learn certain fundamental techniques particular to Tenshin Aikido before you may be eligible to test for the next level.

How long does it take to attain rank?

That is the most frequently asked question and the most difficult to answer. At Tenshin Dojo our main focus is for the student to learn good solid technique and to be able to defend themself. Testing is conducted when the student is technically ready to be promoted. This is determined by the students performance in class and his/her ability to learn and retain the material. On occasion a group of students will be eligible to test and a particular date is announced.

The lenght of time before a new student achives his/her first level of rank (5th kyu) again depends on the student but a good rule of thumb is anywhere between 5 months to one year of consistant training.

How long does it take to achive black belt?
Again a very difficult question to answer since it is soley based on the students ability to learn and retain the material. But in an effort to answer the question there have been students who have earned their black belt in just three years of training but the average students achives black belt in 5 to 10 years of consistant study.

Do you issue Aikikai rank for dan/black belt ranks?
Yes.  Once a student is eligable for black belt ranking, he/she must be examined by Seagal Sensei. If the student passes the examination he/she will be eligible to receive black belt ranking from the Aikikai.   We also  issue in house ranking to verify that you have trained in our school and successfully completed our black belt certification exam.

I've decided to join your dojo, what does it cost to to become a memeber?

This is probably the most frequently asked question.  It is our policy not to quote membership fees over the phone or post them on our web page. Many times potential students will decide to join or not join a dojo based on thhe memebership fee without even visiting the facility. Although cost is always a concern, anyone who is seriously interested in becoming a memeber should visit the dojo in person.

This way you can see the dojo,  watch a class, talk to the instructor, and students and get a general feel for the place.  You can also register for a free week of training so you can truly experience the dojo.
